New Prosthetic Leg Uses Automatic Inflation for Optimal Fit

Researchers at the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials have developed a prototype prosthetic leg that auto-inflates its socket to maintain a comfortable and secure fit. This innovative device is designed for individuals with above-the-knee amputations and utilizes an AI-based algorithm to control an externally mounted electric pump.

The prototype prosthetic leg consists of a carbon fiber outer shell and an inflatable elastomer lining in the socket. Integrated sensors in the leg detect changes in pressure exerted by the user’s stump on the socket while walking. These pressure changes can occur throughout the day due to factors such as blood circulation.

If the sensors detect any empty space within the socket, indicating that the stump may be moving around, the algorithm immediately activates the pump to inflate the lining in those areas. This ensures that the prosthetic leg maintains a firm, yet comfortable fit.

In addition to automatic inflation, the algorithm can also adjust the pressure based on changes in the user’s walking gait. This personalized feature allows for a more natural and comfortable walking experience. Furthermore, users have the option to manually control the pressure using a mobile app.

The unique design of this prosthetic leg addresses a common issue faced by amputees – ill-fitting sockets. When a prosthetic leg does not conform properly to the contours of the user’s stump, it can lead to pain and skin ulcers. By automatically inflating the socket, this innovative solution aims to prevent these complications.

Senior researcher Lee Kang-ho and his team are currently working on commercializing this technology. Their goal is to make this advanced prosthetic leg available to individuals with above-the-knee amputations, providing them with a more comfortable and functional mobility solution.

This automated socket inflation technology has the potential to greatly improve the quality of life for amputees by reducing pain and discomfort associated with ill-fitting prosthetic legs. It also highlights the advancements being made in the field of prosthetics, as researchers continue to develop innovative solutions to enhance the functionality and comfort of artificial limbs.
