New Discovery: A Protein Key to the Spread of the Shingles Virus

New research published in the journal “Nature Microbiology” sheds light on a crucial protein that plays a significant role in the spread of the shingles virus. According to the researchers, the protein, named gE, is produced by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) – the same virus that causes chickenpox and shingles. The team discovered that gE helps the virus to spread from nerve cells to the skin, initiating the painful rash that is a hallmark of shingles.

The scientists made this discovery by studying mice infected with VZV. They found that the virus replicated in the nerve cells and then spread to the skin through a process called trans-synaptic transport. This transport is facilitated by gE, which acts as a bridge between the nerve cells and the skin cells.

The researchers also found that blocking the activity of gE in mice prevented the spread of the virus to the skin, suggesting that targeting this protein could be an effective strategy for preventing shingles.

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, affects millions of people worldwide, particularly those over the age of 50. The condition causes a painful rash, often accompanied by fever and other symptoms. While there are treatments available, there is currently no cure for shingles, and the risk of developing the condition increases with age.

The new findings could lead to the development of new vaccines or therapies that target gE and prevent the spread of the virus. The researchers are optimistic about the potential of their discovery, stating that “our findings provide a new avenue for the development of antiviral drugs and vaccines against shingles.”
