Why Solid State Drives (SSD) Are Better Than Traditional Hard Disk Drives

A solid state drive, also known as an SSD, is a data storage device that uses memory chips instead of a spinning disk to store and retrieve data. Unlike traditional hard disk drives which have moving parts, SSDs have no moving mechanical components which allows them to operate more quietly without vibrations or noise.

Seek times, which is how long it takes the drive’s arm to find requested data, is almost instantaneous on SSDs compared to milliseconds on hard drives. This results in noticeably faster boot times, application load times, file transfers and overall system responsiveness. SSD read speeds can be up to 20 times faster than conventional hard drives while write speeds are also significantly improved being up to 10 times faster.

Increased Durability and Shock Resistance

The absence of fragile spinning disks and actuator arms means SSDs are much more durable and resistant to shocks from bumps or falls compared to hard disk drives. Traditional HDDs rely on precise alignment of moving components which can easily get misaligned or damaged from shocks rendering the drive unusable. SSDs on the other hand have no moving parts so they can withstand greater impacts and vibrations without data loss or drive failure. This makes SSDs better suited for mobile and transportable devices that may experience bumps or accidental drops.

Lower Power Consumption and Cooler Operation

Without motion-dependent components, SSDs consume much less power than conventional HDDs. Typical SSD power usage is only 1-5 watts compared to around 5-10 watts for HDDs. This reduced power draw helps extend battery life on portable devices. SSDs also produce less heat so they run cooler which is more efficient and reduces noise from cooling fans. Less heat output also means SSDs are suitable for use in small form factor devices with limited ventilation.

Lifespan and Reliability

While Solid State Drives (SSD) have no moving parts, their flash memory does have a finite lifespan based on the number of program/erase cycles it can endure before wearing out. Leading manufacturers rate modern SSDs for at least 200 full drive writes per day for 5 years which equates to a lifespan of around 150 terabytes written. Compared to HDD lifespans in the range of 500,000 hours of continuous operation, SSDs appear to last longer based on amount of data that can be written. SSDs are also more shock resistant and don’t have reliability issues associated with actuator arms or heads like hard drives do.

Cost and Storage Capacity

For a few years after their introduction, SSDs were very expensive per gigabyte compared to HDDs but prices have been steadily declining. In 2020, SSD prices reached near-parity with HDDs on a cost per gigabyte basis for average consumers. While SSDs still cost more per gigabyte for higher capacities, their lower power consumption and lack of moving parts means total lifetime costs are lower than HDDs. SSD storage capacities have also increased dramatically with multi-terabyte sizes now available.

SSD Form Factors

SSDs are available in the most common form factors like 2.5-inch drives found in laptops as well as m.2/NVMe for ultrabooks and desktops. There are also SSDs available in smaller form factors like the M.2 2230 commonly used in small notebook PCs. Older proprietary SSD formats have faded with industry standards like m.2 becoming widely adopted. Thanks to multiple form factors, SSDs can replace HDDs in virtually any device from desktops to servers and embedded systems.

Choosing the Right Solid State Drives (SSD) Type

When buying an SSD, there are two main interface types – SATA and NVMe. SATA SSDs connect over the same interface as HDDs but NVMe (also called PCIe) SSDs use the faster PCI Express interface found on modern motherboards. In general, NVMe SSDs offer 2-3 times faster speeds than SATA for a higher price but both provide a big boost over HDDs. Other factors like capacity, endurance, brand and price all need weighing up based on intended usage when selecting which SSD is best for the job.

Replacing an aging HDD with a new SSD is widely considered one of the most cost-effective upgrades that can breathe new life into an old PC or laptop. Not only do applications and the operating system feel dramatically faster to use, the replacement SSD helps extend the usable lifetime of devices. For new computers, opting for SSD primary storage over HDD is virtually essential for a good user experience in the modern computing era. Overall system responsiveness is transformed with an SSD.

While HDDs still have uses where high capacity is needed for deep archive storage, SSDs deliver unmatched performance and efficiency advantages. With constantly falling prices and increasing capacities, SSDs are set to one day replace HDDs entirely.
