Poultry Farming: An Overview raising of domesticated birds such as chickens

They begin laying eggs at around 18 weeks of age and may continue egg laying for 12-18 months.

Most commercial chicken farming today involves raising chickens in large windowless sheds holding tens of thousands of birds. The birds are intensively reared and have limited space. However, this industrial system allows for high production levels with lower production costs per chicken. A less intensive free-range or pasture-based system involves housing the chickens in open-sided barns with access to the outdoors. Turkey Farming

Turkeys are sometimes raised on smaller farms specializing in heritage or specialty breeds. However, the majority of turkey production takes place on large commercial operations specifically focused on efficiently raising turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Broad-breasted white turkeys make up over 90% of commercial turkey production. Poults are housed in enclosed barns and fed a specialized diet to reach market weight, around 20 pounds, in 16-20 weeks. The largest turkey producing states in the US are Minnesota, North Carolina, Arkansas and Virginia.

Duck and Goose Farming

Duck and goose farming accounts for a very small fraction of total fowl production globally compared to chickens or turkeys. Ducks are sometimes raised together with chickens to control insects. Popular breeds include Pekin, Rouen, and Khaki Campbell ducks. Ducks have a shorter growing cycle than chickens, reaching market weight at 6-8 weeks. Foie gras production also involves force feeding ducks and geese to fatten their liver. Geese are more commonly raised on a smaller scale for their meat and feathers.

Fowl Production and Processing

Commercial Poultry farming follows an intensive production model with day-old chicks, poults or ducklings obtained from specialized hatcheries. The birds are raised in climate controlled barns on deep litter such as wood shavings or in cage-free systems. They receive customized feed formulated for their stage of growth which aims to maximize yield while minimizing production costs. Drug regimes aim to prevent disease and promote rapid growth rates.

Once birds reach market age and weight, they are transported to processing facilities. Here they are handled in an automated fashion with minimal stress. Stunning renders the birds insensible before mechanical cutters remove feathers and internal organs in what is typically a single integrated line. Chicken and turkey carcasses are then chilled, packaged and distributed fresh or frozen to grocery stores and foodservice operations worldwide.

Impact and Sustainability of Fowl Farming

The commercial Poultry industry has undergone tremendous growth driven by low prices and consumer demand for chicken and eggs as an affordable source of protein. However, intensive production methods have also attracted criticism from animal welfare and environmental advocacy groups. Issues like confined housing conditions, routine antibiotic use, manure management and impacts on neighbouring communities are ongoing areas of debate.

The industry is making efforts to adopt more sustainable practices through initiatives like controlled atmosphere stunning which aims to reduce stress for birds before slaughter. Genetic selection also focuses on disease resistance and feed efficiency to lessen environmental impacts. While industrial fowl production will remain the dominant model, there is growing interest in pasture-based alternatives and shorter supply chains that provide birds with more natural living conditions. Overall, balancing economic and nutritional benefits with animal welfare and environmental protection will be an ongoing challenge for the long-term viability and social license of fowl farming globally.
