How Human Facial Expressions are Teaching Androids to Smile

Researchers in Japan have taken a step closer to creating robots capable of displaying human emotion by studying the intricate mechanical details of real human facial expressions. Published in the Mechanical Engineering Journal, the study was conducted by a team led by Osaka University, who used 125 tracking markers attached to a person’s face to closely examine 44 distinct facial actions, such as blinking or raising the corner of the mouth.

The complexity of facial expressions lies in the variety of local deformations that occur as muscles stretch and compress the skin. Even the simplest movements can be surprisingly intricate. Beneath the skin of our faces, there are different tissues at work, including muscle fibers and fatty adipose, that all work together to convey our emotional state. This level of detail makes facial expressions subtle and nuanced, making them challenging to recreate artificially. Until now, researchers had relied on simpler measurements of overall face shape and the motion of selected points on the skin before and after movements.

While we may not notice the fine details of our own faces, from an engineering perspective, they are incredible information display devices, explains Hisashi Ishihara, the main author of the study. By studying facial expressions, we can determine when a smile is masking sadness or if someone is feeling tired or nervous.

The information gathered in this study can benefit researchers working with artificial faces, both digitally created on screens and physical faces of android robots. By understanding the tensions and compressions within the facial structure, precise measurements of human faces can make artificial expressions more accurate and natural.

Akihiro Nakatani, the senior author, explains that the facial structure beneath our skin is complex. The deformation analysis in this study helps explain how sophisticated expressions, which involve both stretched and compressed skin, can be derived from seemingly simple facial actions.

The applications of this research extend beyond robotics and can improve facial recognition technology as well as aid in medical diagnoses. Currently, doctors rely on intuition to notice abnormalities in facial movement.

While this study has only focused on one person’s face, the researchers aim to broaden their understanding of human facial motions. The potential outcomes of this research include enabling robots to recognize and express emotions as well as improving facial movements in computer graphics, such as those used in movies and video games, to avoid the unsettling “uncanny valley” effect.

With advancements in technology and a deeper understanding of the mechanics behind human facial expressions, the day may come when androids can genuinely smile and express emotions, bringing science fiction closer to reality.
