Google Aims to Assist in Climate Change Decision-Making

Google has unveiled a series of updates aimed at assisting individuals and organizations in reducing their carbon footprints and making more sustainable choices. The tech giant hopes that these updates will help people live climate-friendly lives by providing enhanced search results for electric vehicles (EVs), heat pumps, and air conditioning units. In addition, Google announced expanded AI tools that can aid in the reduction of tailpipe emissions and better predict natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, and extreme heat.

As climate change continues to accelerate, Google has made it a priority to regularly release updates that help combat its effects. These updates demonstrate the company’s commitment to mitigating the impact of climate change and preparing for a future dominated by environmental upheaval, according to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

Pichai shared a video message with reporters, highlighting the importance of combating climate change. He referred to it as humanity’s next major endeavor, comparing it to a moonshot that comes with significant challenges.

Enhanced EV Search Results
With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles, individuals who are considering making the switch to EVs often seek reliable information about their options. Google aims to be the go-to source for such information. The company is now providing new search results for EV shoppers that include details about potential government incentives, such as the federal EV tax credit in the US. This enables people to determine whether the vehicle they are interested in qualifies for any discounts. The improved search results are already available in the US and will be launched in France and Germany later this year.

EV owners will also benefit from more precise information about battery range. When searching for specific EV models on Google, users will be able to view details about how far they can travel on a single charge. Additionally, they will be able to customize routes based on elevation changes and speed limits, allowing them to calculate how many charging stops they may need along the way. The battery range explorer feature will be launched in the US first and will be made available in Europe early next year.

Estimating accurate battery range in an EV can be challenging due to various external factors, such as temperature. To address this issue, Google is gathering information about EVs, including mass and battery size, from its Knowledge Graph database. The company is also obtaining road load data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which captures factors such as rolling friction, aerodynamics, and mechanical friction.
