Thousands of users of X, formerly Twitter, experienced widespread issues on Thursday, according to reports from a monitoring site. The problems, which began surfacing just before 0600 GMT, were reported by users worldwide on Downdetector, an online platform for tracking outages.
The reports suggested that X (Twitter) was experiencing difficulties, as users reported problems accessing the platform. During the outage, users noticed that their timelines were empty, with no new posts visible, although the main twitter.com website remained accessible.
With no way to post updates on X, users turned to alternative social media platforms such as Facebook, Threads, and Reddit to share information about the outage. However, service on X gradually resumed in multiple countries shortly after 0640 GMT.
At its peak, Downdetector recorded around 67,000 reports of problems from users in the United States alone. The outage also impacted X Pro, previously known as TweetDeck.
No official statement has been released by X regarding the cause of the outage. The company is currently facing a range of challenges, including an EU investigation under a law aimed at combating disinformation and hate speech, criticism of its response to recent unrest in Dublin, and the departure of several major advertisers.
Internal documents obtained by tech publication The Verge and shared with staff revealed that X is now worth less than half of the $44 billion Elon Musk paid for it in October 2022.
This is not the first major outage X users have experienced. In February, Downdetector reported another significant disruption that impacted thousands of users. This time, complaints from users included the inability to send messages, being notified that they had exceeded their daily posting limit, and the failure to send direct messages.
As X continues to face challenges and technical issues, it remains to be seen how the platform will address these recurring problems and maintain user confidence in its service.
